The academic workshop “Transscalarity” delved into drivers of spatial transformation across seven distinct climate zones worldwide. This workshop was a collaborative effort under the Global Campus Initiative between the University of Innsbruck and the University of Texas at Arlington.
Held on February 6, 2024, at the Institute of Design, Unit of Spatial Design at the University of Innsbruck, the event hosted 140 students from both universities. These students came together to present their transscalar projects, showcasing their research, analyses, and proposals for addressing spatial transformation within various climate zones.
One particularly intriguing aspect of the workshop was the dynamic discussion facilitated by an interdisciplinary panel comprising Dr. Oswald Jenewein, Dr. Mohsen Hajibabaei, and Dr. Yannick Back. Their expertise in fields ranging from architecture to urban design, and from environmental engineering to urban geography provided diverse perspectives and insights into the complexities of spatial transformation.
Throughout the workshop, participants explored the multifaceted influences driving spatial transformation, considering environmental factors, cultural dynamics, economic structures, and technological advancements. By examining case studies from seven distinct climate zones, students gained a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between human activities and environmental processes, highlighting the importance of adopting circular approaches to the spatial design of architecture and the city.
The workshop served as a platform for exchanging ideas, fostering collaboration, and inspiring innovative solutions to address the challenges posed by spatial transformation in an era of climate change and rapid urbanization. Through interdisciplinary dialogue and collaborative efforts, participants worked towards shaping more sustainable and resilient futures for diverse landscapes and communities across the globe.
